Hi, I’m Lauren and this is how I became fitness trainer in a nutshell…
People ask me all the time, “have you always been fit?” Well, that’s a loaded question. I played sports in high school and always tried to be active. I’ve worked in the bar/restaurant industry my whole life so I have always been someone with pretty strenuous job activity. Strenuous meaning always moving, always on my feet.
When I moved Arizona in 2010, I met a girl at work and we decided to get a gym membership and share a personal trainer. We really loved it and we went once to twice a week. We kept with it even after the gym got bought out and we were transferred over to a new gym with a new trainer. It’s been so long now, I can’t quite remember but I think once the membership was up and sessions were all used, we quit training. I then started to live the life of a 21 year old.
I met a guy and we started dating. I was 20 going on 21 and he was older so he always wanted to try and show me a “good time” with drinking and partying. We went out all the time I was up all night, ate whatever I wanted and didn’t care about what I put into my body, smoked cigarettes and the guy I was with wasn’t into fitness or a healthy lifestyle whatsoever but I guess when you’re 21 you don’t really care about going to the gym and you don’t really think about those things like a “healthy” lifestyle. That’s not really at the top of your priority list… at least it wasn’t for me.
After a couple of years, I noticed my body changing. I took a picture and saw myself and thought, “what happened to me?” I gained a lot of weight and I just felt like crap all the time. Hungover almost everyday. At this point, I knew I didn’t love this guy anymore and I knew he wasn’t going to help me be a better person. I knew this because he was the one who showed me this lifestyle in the first place. He was almost 30 years old and still going strong with that kind of lifestyle. I was 23 and knew that I didn’t want to be like this at 30 let alone another year! I went back to the gym. I joined, and got another personal trainer to keep me accountable. I noticed a little difference but it wasn’t until I ended my relationship that I was really able to make the changes I wanted.
In 2014, I knew that I needed to make a change in my life and I knew that for me to be happy and healthy I needed to rid myself of that relationship and start living a lifestyle I knew I wanted. I broke up with my boyfriend. I quit smoking cigarettes and I quit drinking. (Not all at once, but I did it over time). That was a total game changer for me. My head and lungs became clear and going to the gym became a passion. A new relationship blossomed and he is now the love of my life. He supports me, keeps me level headed and is always pushing and motivating me to be the best person I can be. The complete opposite of my previous relationship. After about a year of my new lifestyle, I decided to do a bikini competition. I ended up doing two! I loved competing. I learned so much about fitness, nutrition and everything in between. In 2018, I got my CPT through NASM and I’ve been a trainer since November 2018.
I have been passionately pursuing every aspect of the health and fitness industry for the last 4 years. I’ve come such a long way and have learned so much about myself and what I am capable of. I still have so much to learn and I love it. Every part of it. Being a fitness trainer motivates me more to become a better, stronger person. I love being that person to my clients to help them achieve the same changes I wanted to achieve. What I love most is when a client comes to be with new progress they’ve made or a new ”light bulb” goes off in their head and things just start to click for them. I love when I get to be part of someone’s journey because there was only a handful of people in my life that supported me when I decided to make the change and I know how much that meant.
From trainers to friends, to family, and my boyfriend. I was able to push myself to become a trainer who helps other people achieve their goals. It takes a strong person to see what’s wrong and what’s toxic in their life, cut all ties, and pursue what they REALLY want. I never thought 5 years ago I would become a personal trainer but over time, all signs pointed to it. I haven’t been doing it long, but I love it. I love my clients and helping them achieve their goals and get the results they never could before. Who knew one day I could go to work and actually want to be there?! If you are someone who is at a point in your life where you need to make that change, just do it. Be real with yourself and see what’s holding you back. If you want to make a change in your life, you are the only one who can make that change. Do what you have to do to make yourself happy and healthy.
