My husband and I opened up our very first business, Unique Performance, in our garage in our cozy little house in Power Ranch, Gilbert, AZ. We trained clients basically all day every day while we had a nanny take care of our son. Some days, my husband watched our son while I trained; other days he trained and I watched our son. Some days we were like ships passing in the night.
We eventually hired a trainer to train even more clients from our home because we couldn’t keep up. We had clients in our home training with him until 9 or 10 o’clock at night. We gave him a key and he would lock up our home after he was done, as we were already sleeping. You have to go to bed early when your day begins at 4 am. It got to the point where we constantly had people in and out of our home, and had absolutely zero privacy. It was at that point that we decided to rent a studio in Queen Creek and officially open up our own personal training studio.
We jumped and worked our asses off to build up Unique Performance. We didn’t jump hoping “the net would appear.” Nope, it doesn’t work like that. If you want something bad enough, you have to MAKE it happen. We worked around the clock trying to build up our business and clientele. Rain or shine… holidays… birthdays… weekends… we worked.
Unique Performance became so successful, through the hiring and firing trainers, through the birth of our second child, through the purchase of our first home, through issues with Maricopa County permits, through the death of my mom, through the implementation of and the failure of new ideas… through pain, failure, and loss, because WE WORKED. We never gave up. We sacrificed time, energy, money, and resources to push forward and build a brand that people would talk about. And guess what? We freaking did it!
We built something from the ground up with our bare hands (literally). It took a lot of blood, sweat, tears, anxiety, fear, and worry, but also determination to succeed. We didn’t have faith that everything would work out. Faith isn’t how you pay your bills and grow your business. We racked our brains constantly trying to find new ways to grow our brand and reach more people. If we didn’t know the answer to how to do something… well, we faked it until we made it. Google is your friend when you’re starting a business for the first time. We google searched the shit out of everything. We wanted to touch as many lives as possible and make a living doing something we loved. We wanted our children to see us work and pour everything we had into chasing our dream and making it a reality. We wanted them to see the team of amazing trainers and friends we surrounded ourselves with to build this business and to pick up the slack when we were worn out (shout out to Max Resendez who runs the place when we’re gone and who is our right hand man). Because let’s face it, making your dream a reality is exhausting. BUT it is also exhilarating and exciting, knowing that you REALLY can achieve anything you set out to do. IF, and ONLY IF, you work for it.
The grind never ends when you’re chasing your dreams but you know what, that’s ok! Because at the end of the day, you will be able to kick your feet up and know that you didn’t sit along the sidelines watching life happen. You did something to help you live up to your full potential and make an impact on this Earth. And there is no better feeling in this world than that.
