What is up everyone? For those of you that don’t know me, my name is Matt. Ryan texted me about a month ago asking if I wanted to write a blog for the site and share my story and my experience so far with Unique Performance. I felt honored when he asked and I said yes without any hesitation. So here it goes.
I started training with Max in May of 2017, but Max wasn’t just my trainer, he was a friend of mine that I had met a few years before that. But back to the story at hand. Max had a very difficult task in training me due to my past medical injuries.
So I need to give you just a little bit of a back story so you can understand the difficulty I am talking about in training ME specifically.
On June 26, 2007 I broke my neck while attending a summer camp in Prescott, AZ. Not to dive too much into that story, because it would be an entirely separate blog, I’m just going to give you the gist of what happened. At the camp there was a game called Last Man Standing and the point of the game is to put a Rubbermaid trash can over your head and run straight into the other person in front of you, who you cannot see. The camp counselor counted down from 3 and finally said go. From that moment on my life had changed forever. I was rushed to the hospital by helicopter, taken into surgery, and sent to ICU after the successful removal of the fractured vertebrae. But the words from the surgeon afterwards are what mattered the most to me. The Dr told me that I had “fractured my C5 & C6 vertebrae, damaging the spinal cord, and would be paralyzed from the neck down for the rest of my life.”
I’m 17 years old at this time of my life. I did not want to spend the rest of my life in a bed or even a wheelchair. So I told the Dr, “I respect what you’re saying but FUCK THAT! I will walk again! I will not be stuck like this. I still have my whole life ahead of me and I don’t want to live it like this.”
That was 11 years ago and here we are now at the end of 2018. I now walk with a forearm crutch. I train with Max 4 times a week and I STILL continue to improve. I’m walking better, with and without my crutch. My legs are getting stronger and I can push more weight. My mobility and even my flexibility have improved drastically. But do you know why I’m still improving? It’s because I never gave up, I never let anyone tell me what I can and can’t do, and when someone tells me that I can’t do something, I prove them wrong. I kept that “FUCK THAT” mentality over all the years. And that’s why I absolutely love Unique Performance. Every trainer has that same mentality.
FUCK YOUR EXCUSES!!! Honestly! Your excuses, your problems, your own hindrances or whatever it may be, none of these matter if you truly want something and are willing to put in the work that needs to be done in order to achieve your goals.
So if I can break my neck, never give up, and walk again with a crutch, then all of you can push past your excuses and problems and get whatever you want. Please, just NEVER GIVE UP!
